Bright Lights: The CLS Assembly Team at STG

In our Bright Lights series, we showcase some of our brilliant employees and their experience of working here at STG Aerospace. This time, we're talking to the whole Cabin Lighting Systems Assembly Team to get an insight into their typical day and what they value most about working at STG.
Our Cabin Lighting Systems (CLS) Assembly Team is responsible for ensuring that our range of electrical LED lighting products are expertly assembled for our aerospace customers every single time, with quality and efficiency at the core of these roles.
Products that the team is tasked with assembling include STG’s innovative liTeMood® system, which is a popular retrofit solution for Boeing and Airbus aircraft, as well as new electrical products that our experts are in the process of developing and testing.
As with all STG teams, the daily acronyms could almost make a language of their own, but one they all speak fluently.
Who is in the team?
The CLS team is made up of three members, two of whom are called Chris. The Team Leader is Linda Perryman, with two Production Operatives Chris Boote and Chris Oliver!
Whilst the team is small in number, the nature of their work involves a significant amount of collaboration with other departments on a daily basis, including the Engineering team, the Quality team and the Supply Chain team.
Linda explains: “At the heart of what we do is a lot of problem solving and we’re a close-knit team, but we certainly don’t work in silos. We rely on the support and collaboration of our colleagues across STG to make sure that what we deliver are the best possible products.”
What does a typical day look like?
Every day is different for the CLS team and is carefully planned out. One day they may be building and soldering standard LRUs (Line Replacement Units), which are components designed for quick and easy replacement during aircraft maintenance, whilst the next they may be focused on the new product introduction (NPI) process, to develop one of STG’s new lighting solutions.
Currently, the team is working on developing a top-secret customer project using STG’s The Curve™ flexible LED light, which is a section addressable light unit with a tight bend radius. Its flexible functionality allows The Curve™ to create a unique passenger lighting experience throughout the cabin.
What does the team have to say?
When asked how their STG colleagues would describe the CLS team, they summarised themselves in three adjectives: reliable, hard-working, and technical.
Team Leader Linda is inclined to agree and says: “My team is excellent at what they do, no question, and they use their expertise with extreme precision to get the job at hand done as well as it possibly could be.”
The team also appreciate the recognition they get from within the firm. Chris Boote explains: “It is a very positive environment at STG, there is a sense of being valued and appreciated for the work you do and really being recognised for your strengths and abilities. There is never a day when you are not learning. I also get great satisfaction from the process of creating a final product from all the individual parts.”
