STG Bright Lights: PL Assembly Team

In our Bright Lights series, we showcase some of our brilliant employees and their experience of working here at STG Aerospace. This time, we're throwing the spotlight on the whole Photoluminescent Assembly Team to give an insight into their day to day, how they work together and what gives the team their spark.
At STG, the Photoluminescent (PL) Assembly Team plays a crucial role in ensuring that our range of emergency floor path marking products are put together with precision and expertise.
At STG, we pioneered the first photoluminescent (PL) emergency exit marking system and offer a range of products designed to enhance aircraft safety, efficiency and cabin aesthetics. Our products use advanced glow-in-the-dark technology to provide visible, reliable, and maintenance-free emergency egress systems, with no reliance on electrical power. The photoluminescent lighting is easy to install, 100% fail safe, has automatic activation and an unlimited lifespan.
The PL Assembly Team is responsible for making sure that STG delivers exceptional products every time, with a focus on precision, efficiency, and teamwork. With nine team members, including Andy (PL Team Leader), Dafydd (Demand Planner), and Production Operatives Peter, Rod, Ewa, Lynn, Dorota, Jack, and Joseph, they work closely together to maintain the highest standards in production.
A typical day
Every day the team start with careful planning. Weekly schedules are mapped out with Dafydd to ensure everyone knows which orders and products are needed and when the deadline is. Of course, no day truly begins without a cup of tea!
Each team member takes their station and starts working through the day’s assigned tasks. While some focus on specific product assembly, others handle testing to maintain strict quality control. Variety keeps the team engaged, and each member has the opportunity to develop skills they would like to focus on. Dorota is the metal expert of the team, and her knowledge has inspired other members to enhance their skills in this area too.
Current projects
The team prides itself in delivering all products on time.
To maintain this reputation, the team is always looking for ways to improve processes and increase efficiency. Recently, continuous improvement initiatives have led to a 25% increase in the team’s output. Enhancements in planning schedules and improved team communication have also helped to streamline their operations.
With any large orders, the Assembly Team must work with other teams in the business to ensure everyone is doing their bit to meet the overall goal. For example, a recent major bulk order required close collaboration with the Print Team and warehouse to ensure shipsets are built and delivered on time.
What makes the team special?
The camaraderie within the PL Assembly Team is a highlight for many of its members. Though including a few new faces, the team has quickly developed a strong bond. Lynn, one of the newer members said:
“We all get along really well, and I love it here. Everyone is helpful, friendly, and willing to take the time to help you learn.”
Dafydd added:
“We enjoy story time with Rod. He’s full of random tales of his adventures, which makes for a great and friendly atmosphere. There’s always good banter!”
Food is another key part of team culture, and the team enjoys chatting over tea and cake. The manageable work hours also make for a great work-life balance which is important to everyone.
The PL Assembly Team takes pride in being part of STG, a company that feels like an extended family, where hard work is valued and rewarded.
